Cross-residency with Xavier Jacollo

As part of the work of the Anisotropie association, and in connection with the Séquences Éphémères project, we had the pleasure of hosting Xavier Jacollo for a cross-residency combining research and production.

A motion capture specialist for more than fifteen years, Xavier opened up his world to us: the post-processing of motion capture data, the essential stage that turns recorded performance into material usable for animation, video games or research.

The residency was also an opportunity for him to discover and experiment with inertial motion capture using our equipment, having spent his career working with Vicon systems. Together we explored the possible crossings between optical and inertial technology — an experience rich in perspectives.

A moment of sharing, of mutual learning and of openness, and a perfect illustration of the spirit of Séquences Éphémères: crossing knowledge, practices and technologies to invent new ways of creating and passing things on.

What we take from it goes beyond the purely technical. Putting an optical and an inertial system side by side lays bare what each one sees and what each one misses: the precision of the first inside a controlled volume, the freedom of the second outside the studio. For a project like ours, which records as readily in a yard or a classroom as on a stage, that comparison is not academic — it shapes the protocols we choose.

The residency had a direct sequel: the two case studies we presented at the Cap Handicap event were produced within this same working framework — and for Xavier it was a first: working in motion capture with a disabled performer.
